Pair of Sèvres Style Covered Vases, Bleu Céleste Porcelain and Gilt Bronze, Late 19th Century
Pair of covered vases in porcelain in the Sèvres style, with a bleu céleste ground heightened with gold, set in rich Louis XVI style gilt bronze mounts. French work, late 19th century.
Each vase bears two hand-painted reserves. On one side, a gallant scene in a park: a young man playing the lute beside a young lady on one vase, a young lady receiving a basket of fruit from a child on the other. On the reverse, a bouquet of roses and wild flowers. The scenes are framed with gold fillets and set with small raised enamel beads imitating jewels.
The domed covers are decorated with a garland of flowers between two bands of gilt foliage, and topped with a bronze pine-cone finial. The mounts combine a pierced foliate gallery, two double-scroll handles attached by foliate masks, a fluted pedestal circled by a laurel wreath and a square base with canted corners, chased with scrolls.
A bright, decorative pair for a mantelpiece, a console table or a bookcase.
