Clock Garniture after Auguste Moreau, Mantel Clock and Pair of Putti Candelabra, Gilt and Patinated Bronze
Three-piece mantel garniture in gilt and patinated bronze, after a model by the sculptor Auguste Moreau: a mantel clock and a pair of six-light candelabra. 20th century.
The clock depicts an allegory of Painting. A young putto with a dark patina, draped in gilt fabric and wearing a headband, stands in thought, hand to his chin, his palette resting on the clock case. Beside him, an easel bearing a laurel wreath and a medallion with a lyre. The white enamel dial with Arabic numerals is decorated with rose garlands. The curved base, fluted and edged with beading, is adorned with laurel swags and, at the centre, a medallion with a woman's profile.
Each candelabrum is held by a patinated putto crowned with vine leaves, raising his arm to support a six-light branch with foliate arms and bunches of grapes. They stand on a fluted column, a twisted torus and four paw feet.
The contrast between the black patina of the children and the brilliance of the gilding gives the set real presence on a mantelpiece or console table.
