Christofle Covered Écuelle – Pomegranate Finial & Carp Handles – Régence Style – Silver-Plate

€690,00

This covered écuelle in silver-plate was made by the House of Christofle. It follows the shape of the écuelles of early 18th-century Parisian silverware, the two-handled covered bowls once served with their dish, and revives the full decorative vocabulary of the Régence style.

The round bowl, smooth with a mirror polish, rests on a moulded foot. Its two flat handles, worked in high relief, are the highlight of the piece: a central scale-patterned cartouche is framed by two stylised carp with scaled bodies and curled tails, above a gadrooned shell, all on a matted ground within a moulded border.

The domed lid, moulded in several steps, is topped by a finial shaped as a split pomegranate revealing its seeds, set on a bed of chased leaves and buds. The finial is held by a nut, visible inside the lid.

The piece is signed CHRISTOFLE FRANCE under the base and bears the hallmark with the chess knight and the letters OC, used by Christofle from 1935. The absence of the number I or II, added to this hallmark from 1983, places its manufacture between these two dates. The marks are visible in the photographs.

Condition: pre-owned piece in good overall condition; this is not a new item. The silver-plating is intact, with no wear through to the base metal. The lid shows a few pits, small spots visible on the surface of the silver-plating. The piece also shows a few micro-scratches from use, consistent with its age, mostly visible under the base. Condition is shown in detail in the photographs.

As much a display piece as a serving piece, it can be used as a small soup tureen or a vegetable dish, for soup, vegetables or side dishes, and finds its place on a table laid in the French manner as well as in a silverware collection.
