Christofle Gallia Claret Jug – Crystal & Silver-Plate – Louis XV Style
This claret jug combines a crystal body with a silver-plated mount by Orfèvrerie Gallia, the silverware line of the House of Christofle recognisable by its Gallic rooster.
The baluster-shaped crystal body is cut with broad twisted ribs that catch the light and show off the colour of the wine. The mount uses the rocaille vocabulary of the Louis XV style: the neck, on a matted ground, is chased with acanthus leaves and a shell beneath the spout; the moulded hinged lid is raised by a shell-shaped thumbpiece; the scrolled handle is enhanced with foliage; the shaped foot is decorated with shells.
Under the foot, the mount bears the rooster shield "ORFÈVRERIE GALLIA", the chess-knight hallmark used by Christofle from 1935, and the model number 4982. The marks are visible in the photographs.
